SLW#042: Strong Foundations Nurture Excel Experts

weekly newsletter

I believe in building expertise from the ground up. Just like a solid foundation supports a skyscraper, mastering Excel starts with mastering the basics. If your aim is to build a strong Excel foundation for business analysis👇

Here's my solution for you.

Excel Analytics OS

Becoming an Excel Expert is not a dream. To be more specific, becoming an Excel Expert for business analysis is definitely achievable. But How?

Building A Strong Excel Foundation.

Many people possess decent Excel skills but still struggle with Excel analytics due to the lack of a strong foundation.

You should know that mastering Excel analytics is completely different from using Excel for administrative or clerical tasks.

If you want to master analytics, you should understand the relationship between functions and features.

They are correlated. Missing one piece can't complete the puzzle.

Here's the basic 'CONTEXT' you should know:

  1. Starting with data consolidation: Maintain your data in a standard "LIST" format, with one header per column and your data consistently and properly listed under each header.
  2. Combine data into as few worksheets as possible. Of course, you should master lookup and logical functions.
  3. Ensure consistency in cell formatting; for example, avoid mixing "Text" and "Number" formats within the same data column. Mastering date and text functions is necessary.
  4. Convert your range to an Excel Table. It triggers automation. Many users get stuck in the analysis phase simply because they don't use TABLE. Say goodbye to tedious and inaccurate manual updates.
  5. If you want to write formulas in the data sheet, place them on one side. Convert it into a data sheet template, not a messy formula buffet.
  6. Forget about powerful tools. Embrace the right simple tools. No one said data cleaning must be done using Power Query, or data importing must involve the data model. Instead, make it as simple as possible.

You are data-driven business professionals, not technical professionals.

Seems simple, doesn't it? But it's not easy. 99% of users skip them. That's why only 1% are Excel Experts.

If you want to start this simple and impactful journey, building a strong foundation to excel in the future👇
