Let's kick off our topic this week!

Ever seen folks who rock Excel but struggle with analytics? They're Excel wizards but seem stuck when it comes to analyzing data. It's puzzling, right?

If you're here, you probably want to boost your Excel skills. But there's a vital thing that can make or break your analytics journey, and it all boils down to one word:

Purpose.

I'll be honest. I used to think that simply reminding folks to figure out why they're doing analytics would fix this problem. But it's not that simple. Some people don't like changing their ways, and even when they want to, they often forget this important step. Building a purpose-driven approach is a habit, and habits don't change overnight. Real change happens when you really get why having a purpose is super important, or when you can clearly picture what might go wrong if you skip it.

Always remember your purpose.

To make it easy to remember, always keep two key words in mind for your work.

Problems:

These are the areas where you encounter challenges or struggle to make headway. Identifying these problems and discerning their root causes is crucial for business growth. Purpose directs you toward solving these issues effectively.

Consider this scenario: In your business, you've identified a product category that consistently performs poorly, dragging down your overall profitability. Your purpose might be to dissect the problems within this category, identify bottlenecks, and implement strategies to revitalize it. Purpose guides your efforts towards resolving this business issue, potentially turning it into a profitable segment.

Opportunities:

These are your strengths and advantages that can be leveraged to enhance your overall performance. Purpose helps you recognize and capitalize on these opportunities effectively.

For instance, let's say you have a high-performing salesperson in your team who consistently exceeds targets and brings in significant revenue. Your purpose might be to nurture and replicate the strategies employed by this salesperson across your team. Purpose allows you to harness this opportunity to boost your business's overall performance.

So, how do you ensure that your purpose stays at the forefront of your analytics endeavors? Here are five straightforward steps:

  1. Project Statement: Clearly define your purpose and objectives for each analytics task. Write them down where you can see them regularly.

  2. Excel File Name: Rename your Excel file to reflect its purpose and objectives. This serves as a constant reminder of what you aim to achieve.

  3. Yellow Sticky Note: Place a bright yellow sticky note on your laptop or workspace with your purpose written on it. It's a visual cue that keeps you on track.

  4. Personalize It: Give your purpose a name or a tagline that resonates with you personally. This adds a sense of ownership and connection to your goals.

  5. Take Action: Don't stop at just clarifying your purpose. Take proactive steps to align your actions with your goals. Purposeful action is the key to success.

Remember, purpose is the compass that guides you through the world of analytics and business. By tackling problems effectively and seizing opportunities strategically, you can elevate your skills beyond mere Excel proficiency and truly excel in the realm of analytics and business growth.
