SLW #010: Mastering lookup combo - INDEX + MATCH

XLOOKUP is the latest and most powerful lookup function in Microsoft 365. Grasping its functionality is essential, as it serves as a critical link for data within business environments. For example, it allows for the lookup of sales, customer, and delivery data, linking them together for analysis.

Unfortunately, not everyone has access to the XLOOKUP function in their version of Excel, which impacts their ability to:

  1. Create XLOOKUP formulas.

  2. Execute XLOOKUP formulas due to compatibility issues with different Excel versions.

This is why mastering INDEX + MATCH is crucial. Interestingly, XLOOKUP has evolved from the foundation of INDEX + MATCH and can execute the same features.

Let's take a look at how to write an INDEX formula. It's straightforward and simple.

=INDEX(lookup range, row number, column number)

The key consideration is that in the real world, we typically don't use "Row / Column" numbers to look up values. Instead, we commonly search for "headers" along rows and columns to find the desired value.

This is precisely what MATCH does. it searches for the "header" and returns a number that represents the row or column position.

=MATCH(header, lookup range, exact match)

Now, put them together:

INDEX+MATCH+MATCH

=INDEX(lookup range, match(row), match(column))

It's not that difficult, right?
