SLW #009: What motivated me from Excel Newbie to Practical Lover

weekly newsletter

If you are reading this newsletter, I am almost sure you know the importance of learning and applying Excel to your work.

Have you explored the reasons behind it?

Today, I want to share my experiences - what motivated me to grow from an Excel newbie to a practical Excel lover.

1. I don't implore a business report due to delayed technical support

Yes, implore. There is always a gap between the business and technical staff. I almost never found one report that best fits my needs without my input or requirements.

That's okay, let me tell the technical staff what I need. I asked a question: "What is the expected delivery date?"

"Um...it should take about ten days," the technical staff replied.

"OMG, just a few little changes need ten days?" I always wondered.

There is no right or wrong; they are resources not only serving you but also serving other teams and departments.

It is so called "Priority."

I couldn't wait, no, the business couldn't wait. I rolled up my sleeves and did it myself.

When I was competent enough, I realized that the modification only needed 30, or even 15 minutes.

Then, this scenario repeated and repeated in my working journey for many years.

It pushed me to become an Excel Hero in every company.

2. I need the best perspective to view business data

I needed the best perspective to view business data. I was confident in my business domain, fully immersing myself in the business, and I knew the best perspectives to view business data.

I required precisely the perspectives to streamline my analytics process, anything else was extra burden.

An ideal report could embed my analytics logic, providing findings and insights immediately. So, I could spend most of my time digging out root causes and figuring out solutions. I wouldn't waste time doing a second report.

3. I want to learn a data language to communicate with technical people

It's real and possible. I have learned a lot of data concepts from Excel: data structure, data warehouse, multiple data sources, data relationships, data formats, calculating logic, hardcoding, dynamic cells, and the master table.

You name it, there is a lot.

Those data concepts are extremely useful. They have enhanced my confidence to communicate with data people at all levels. One more thing, when they talk to me, they know I know. They won't delay anymore.

4. In the Excel game, you win 50% if you know.

You are able to assign 'Realistic' tasks to your colleagues or subordinates because you know they are possible, as you have already mastered them.

I have been sharing daily Excel content on LinkedIn, and I receive many feedbacks. One of them is, 'The Excel ability is far beyond my imagination.'

That's real. If you know, you have won 50%. If you do, you win the other 50%.

So,

Stay tuned to my LinkedIn posts and read my newsletter, and you can win 50%.
