SLW #007: Speedometer

weekly newsletter

This week, let's talk about the speedometer.

Honestly, I seldom use the speedometer on my dashboard for two reasons:

Firstly, it doesn't create real value in analytics, despite its fancy presentation that may impress the audience. It doesn't provide benchmarking capabilities either. The speedometer is used to represent a single number, such as a percentage from 0 to 100%. I can simply use a number without a chart, which saves space and makes it easier for the audience to understand.

Secondly, creating a speedometer in Excel involves quite a lot of steps. You need to use doughnut charts, pie charts, rotate them by 270 degrees, remove color fills, and so on. It's challenging for beginner users to handle.

However, it's interesting to note that there are many 10-15 minute+ tutorials on YouTube that teach how to create a speedometer. Experience is a form of learning.

I wanted to simplify the process. I have condensed and streamlined the steps, keeping only the necessary ones, and reduced the tutorial to 2 minutes to present to my audience.

The response to my LinkedIn post was amazing. Many people enjoyed it, and perhaps someone will give it a try. Download practice file and go to tutorial here.

More importantly, practicing this not only helps you learn about charts but also logic and how to streamline workflows in the process. It proves very useful in the real world.

A few years ago, I pursued a Master's Degree in Operations Management, and it changed my mindset and my life.

Eliminating unnecessary elements and streamlining workflows improve productivity.

Makes life easier, right?

I have applied the same philosophy to build my course. Efficiently mastering Excel Analytics is not a dream.
